Hardy Brandstötter, one of the fastest snowkiter in the world, is going to be the first kiter ever to adventure the ice of the large lake Baikal in the South Siberian mountains. "The planning of this project started in summer 2006" explains the kite pioneer from Mondsee, who will be crossing the biggest freshwater lake on this planet lengthwise during the Siberian winter 2008.
The 30 years old, who has positioned himself as a well known snowkiter in the past years, is starting one of the biggest and hopefully not his last adventures in the history of snow kiting.
It’s the facts of Baykal-Nur – rich lake – the local name for the lake that amaze by themselves. This World Heritage Site is 25 Million years old, has a length of over 800 km and is up to 1.640 m deep and therefore the largest freshwater reservoir in the world.
Brandstötter who will be crossing this region with a custom made sledge and the help of a kite estimates a 3-5 weeks duration of the project. 400 kilometers on land and 800 kilometers on the frozen lake have to be covered. The distance can add up to 1.700 kilometers depending on the wind conditions. If they are unfavorable he will have to tack.

Locally strong mists who make ones own hand invisible can occur. It can therefore happen that Brandstötter is stuck in the so called very dangerous “White Out”. No wind, no orientation and minus 40° C. A challenge the snowkiter is rather unconcerned about: “It is not the physical endeavor but rather the fact of dealing with the mental challenge, making the right decisions and coping with the endless loneliness and silence that fascinate me” Brandstötter, attracted by the game with body and mind, outlines.
